City Council Votes to Place Utility Users Tax Extension Measure on the Ballot of the General Municipal Election to be held on November 3, 2026

UNION CITY, CA, July 15, 2026 – On July 14, 2026, the Union City Council voted 5‑0 to place a measure on the November 3, 2026 General Municipal Election ballot asking voters whether to extend the City’s existing Utility Users Tax (UUT).

Union City voters approved Measure WW in November 2020, establishing a 5% UUT on electricity, natural gas, telecommunications, and video services. Exemptions are available for qualifying low-income residents and residents age 70 and older. The UUT is scheduled to expire on December 31, 2028.

The UUT currently generates approximately $7 million annually in General Fund revenue for City services, including public safety, street maintenance, youth activities, and senior programming. If approved by voters, the ballot measure would maintain the existing 5% rate and extend the tax through December 31, 2037. If the measure is not approved, the UUT will expire on December 31, 2028.

The November election will also include one City Council seat in each of Districts 2, 3, and 4. Each seat is for a four-year term.

The nomination period for prospective candidates closes at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, August 7, 2026. If an eligible incumbent does not file nomination papers for a particular office by the deadline, the filing period for that office will be extended to 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 12, 2026, for candidates other than the incumbent. Prospective candidates should contact the City Clerk’s Office to schedule an appointment to obtain or file nomination papers.
